  • Developing a suitable hierarchy and scheme

  • Motivating representatives
  • Feedback – closing the loop
  • Training – and ongoing development for representatives
  • Supporting sabbaticals to be successful
  • Finding a common language
  • Developing a brand
  • Communication
  • Engaging postgraduates
  • The mechanisms employed by universities in rewarding extra-curricular activities that are often managed within student unions
  • Getting the demographic right in terms of student engagement/representation
