Region to be cheerful? Exploring the role for vocational HE and apprenticeships within English devolution
James Farr, Director and Richard Guy, Senior Associate, THINK
This session explores how universities can respond to growing expectations to drive economic growth, particularly through apprenticeships and civic engagement. Against the backdrop of expanding English devolution, it draws on recent research into how an optimal local skills system might function. Participants will reflect on their experiences working with devolved authorities, review recent policy changes, and consider practical steps for universities to engage effectively. With Government urging stronger alignment between HE, employers, and regional needs, this session is ideal for institutions seeking to enhance their local impact and play a strategic role in regional development through skills and apprenticeship provision.
From Policy to Practice: Reimagining Apprenticeships Through the Lens of Diversity and Inclusion
Pete Milsom and Shona Taylor, Business Engagement Manager: Early Careers and Apprenticeships, UCAS
This interactive workshop explores apprenticeships and early careers through inclusion, equity, and representation, based on UCAS’ Project Next Generation research. Participants will learn about systemic barriers limiting access for underrepresented groups and hear a case study showing how providers and industry leaders support diverse learners’ success. The session encourages discussion on designing inclusive, adaptive skills pathways for tomorrow’s workforce. Delivered by UCAS Early Careers and Apprenticeship Team members, alongside an apprentice sharing their personal journey, the workshop aligns with the theme of change by addressing diversity challenges and co-creating equitable, future-focused approaches to skills development.
