Whether it is issues around student recruitment, admissions following school closures and exam cancellations, or the wellbeing of staff and students – challenges caused by Covid-19 continue to be a priority for universities. However, one area of positivity and continued growth is Higher and Degree Apprenticeship provision.
School leavers, and those that have recently found themselves out of work due to the pandemic, will enter an extremely competitive job market. Therefore, the opportunity to work and gain a degree at the same time will be very attractive.
We’re already seeing the effects of this from our conversations with university colleagues and understand the support that’s required across the courses on offer. From the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship which is growing on the back of a national campaign to recruit more police officers, to programmes in Engineering that look to address the skills shortages, there is growth potential across the board.
With Higher Apprenticeships accounting for 31.5% of starts in 2019/20, up from 17.4% the previous year, this promising area looks certain to continue growing.
